Summary of the story
Several millennia ago, five African tribes engaged in a conflict over a meteorite that contained the rare metal vibranium. One of the warriors consumed a "heart-shaped herb" that had been affected by the metal, thereby acquiring superhuman abilities and becoming the first "Black Panther". He succeeded in uniting all the tribes except the Jabari Tribe, thereby establishing the nation of Wakanda. Over the centuries, the Wakandans utilized vibranium to develop advanced technology and concealed themselves from the world by posing as a Third World country. In 1992, T'Chaka, the king of Wakanda, visited his brother N'Jobu, who was working undercover in Oakland, California. T'Chaka accused N'Jobu of aiding the black-market arms dealer Ulysses Klaue in stealing vibranium from Wakanda. N'Jobu's accomplice, Zuri, another undercover Wakandan, confirmed T'Chaka's suspicions.
In the present day, following T'Chaka's demise, his son T'Challa returned to Wakanda to ascend to the throne. He and Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje, retrieved T'Challa's former lover Nakia from an undercover mission so that she could attend his coronation ceremony with his mother Ramonda and younger sister Shuri. During the ceremony, the leader of the Jabari Tribe, M'Baku, challenged T'Challa for the crown in a ritual combat. T'Challa emerged victorious and convinced M'Baku to surrender rather than perish.
