Summary of the story
Billions of years ago, the Guardians of the Universe utilized the green essence of willpower to establish an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. The universe was divided into 3,600 sectors, each with a designated Green Lantern. Abin Sur of Sector 2814, a member of the Corps, vanquished the malevolent entity Parallax and confined him to the Lost Sector on the barren planet Ryut.
In the present day, Parallax escapes from his confinement after being fortified by the fear of crash survivors who stumbled upon his prison on the abandoned planet. Parallax feeds on their terror to augment his strength and subsequently attacks and gravely injures Abin Sur, who flees and crash-lands on Earth. Abin Sur commands his power ring to locate a worthy successor before succumbing to his injuries.
The ring selects Hal Jordan, a self-assured test pilot employed by Ferris Aircraft, who is transported to the crash site. Abin Sur, on the brink of death, designates Hal as a Green Lantern and instructs him to take the lantern and recite the oath. Hal complies and is transported to the Green Lantern Corps' home planet of Oa, where he undergoes training with veteran Corps members Tomar-Re, Kilowog, and Corps leader Sinestro, who harbors doubts about Hal's suitability and courage.
Hal becomes disheartened by the rigorous training sessions and Sinestro's skepticism, leading him to resign and return to Earth with the power ring and lantern.
