Summary of the story
In the year 2045, a dystopian world plagued by climate change and constant pandemics has resulted in a global dictatorship centered in Japan. In order to escape from this harsh reality, individuals turn to the OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation), a multiplayer virtual reality entertainment universe created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow of Gregarious Games. Following Halliday's demise during the "wasting plague" of 2040, caused by factory farming, a pre-recorded message left by his avatar Anorak announces a contest, offering ownership of the OASIS to the first individual to locate the golden Easter egg, which is situated behind a locked gate that can only be opened by completing three challenges to acquire the necessary keys. The contest has attracted numerous "Gunters," or egg hunters, and has captured the attention of Nolan Sorrento, the CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI), who seeks to control the OASIS by inserting intrusive online advertising. IOI dispatches an army of indentured servants and employees known as "Sixers" to search for the egg.
Wade Watts, a teenage orphan, assumes the avatar Parzival and is an enthusiastic Gunter who participates in the first challenge, an unbeatable race, alongside his best friend Aech and Art3mis, a female online streamer whose avatar Parzival admires. Parzival frequently revisits Halliday's Journals, a simulated archive of Halliday's life and hobbies, managed by the Curator. Here, he discovers that he can win the race by driving backward and receives the Copper Key from Anorak. Art3mis, Aech, and their friends Daito and Sho also win the race and are subsequently referred to as the High-5 on the OASIS' scoreboard.
