Summary of the story
Samuel Mullins, a skilled dollmaker, and his wife Esther are mourning the loss of their beloved seven-year-old daughter, Annabelle, affectionately known as "Bee". Tragically, Bee passed away after being struck by a car.
Twelve years later, the Mullins family generously offers their home as a refuge for Sister Charlotte and six young girls who have been left homeless due to the closure of their orphanage. Despite being cautioned to avoid Bee's locked bedroom, Janice, a young orphan afflicted with polio, discovers a note that reads "Find me" and ventures into the room, which has inexplicably become unlocked. Inside, she discovers a key to Bee's closet and unlocks it, revealing a haunting porcelain doll. Unbeknownst to her, this act unleashes a malevolent demon that begins to terrorize the girls.
One night, the demon takes on Bee's form and appears to Janice, demanding her soul. Despite her attempts to escape using a stairlift, the demon thwarts her efforts and violently throws her to the ground floor, leaving her gravely injured and confined to a wheelchair. Linda, Janice's closest friend, is also tormented by the demon. One morning, the demon, disguised as Sister Charlotte, lures Janice to the old barn where it attacks and possesses her after vomiting black bile directly into her mouth. Linda notices a change in Janice's behavior and informs Samuel that Janice had entered Bee's room and discovered the doll. Samuel trusts Linda's account. Janice, now able to walk, transforms into the demon and savagely murders Samuel, who had been following her while holding a crucifix. The demon forces him to drop the crucifix by contorting his fingers backwards one by one. Outside, Sister Charlotte hears Samuel's screams and is horrified to discover his lifeless body on the floor.
