Summary of the story
Sixteen years following the successful defense of Pandora by the Na'vi against the RDA invasion, Jake Sully now serves as the chief of the Omatikaya clan and has established a family with Neytiri, consisting of their sons Neteyam and Lo'ak, daughter Tuk, and adopted children Kiri and Spider, the latter being the human son of the late Colonel Miles Quaritch who was born on Pandora. The Na'vi are dismayed to learn that the RDA, under the leadership of Frances Ardmore, has returned to colonize Pandora due to the ecocide that is plaguing Earth. The RDA has brought with them Recombinants, which are Na'vi avatars implanted with the memories of deceased human soldiers, with Quaritch's recombinant serving as their leader.
A year later, Jake leads a guerilla campaign against the RDA. During a counterinsurgency mission, Quaritch and his subordinates capture Jake's children. Jake and Neytiri successfully rescue their children, but Spider remains in Quaritch's custody as he recognizes him as his son. After failing to extract information from Spider, Quaritch decides to spend time with him in an attempt to win him over to his side. In the process, Spider imparts knowledge of Na'vi culture and language to Quaritch.
