Summary of the story
In contemporary times, a group of scientists in the Arctic region have discovered an ancient, frozen aircraft. This aircraft is linked to a significant event that occurred in March 1942, when Nazi lieutenant general Johann Schmidt and his troops stole a mysterious artifact known as the Tesseract. This object is believed to possess immense divine powers and was taken from the town of Tønsberg in Norway, which was under German occupation at the time.
In New York City, Steve Rogers, a young man with several health and physical issues, is repeatedly turned down for military recruitment during World War II. However, while attending a technology exhibition with his close friend, Sgt. James "Bucky" Barnes, Rogers expresses his desire to serve his country in the war. Dr. Abraham Erskine, who overhears their conversation, offers Rogers the opportunity to enlist in the Strategic Scientific Reserve as part of a "super-soldier" experiment. This experiment is led by Erskine, Colonel Chester Phillips, and British MI6 agent Peggy Carter. Although Phillips initially doubts Rogers' suitability for the procedure, he changes his mind after witnessing Rogers' bravery in sacrificing himself to save his comrades during a test. The night before the experiment, Erskine reveals to Rogers that Schmidt had undergone a similar procedure prematurely and suffered permanent side-effects.
