Summary of the story
In 1995, on the capital planet of Hala belonging to the Kree Empire, a member of the Starforce named Vers suffered from amnesia and recurring nightmares involving an older woman. Her mentor and commander, Yon-Rogg, trained her to control her abilities while the Supreme Intelligence, the artificial intelligence governing the Kree, urged her to regulate her emotions.
During a mission to rescue an undercover operative infiltrating a group of Skrulls, alien shapeshifters with whom the Kree were at war, Vers was captured by Skrull commander Talos. A probe of Vers' memories led them to Earth. Vers escaped and crash-landed in Los Angeles, attracting the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. Their investigation was interrupted by a Skrull attack, during which Vers recovered a crystal containing her extracted memories while Fury killed a Skrull impersonating Coulson.
Talos, disguised as Fury's superior Keller, ordered Fury to collaborate with Vers and monitor her. Using her extracted memories, Vers and Fury went to the Project Pegasus installation at a U.S. Air Force base. They discovered that Vers was a pilot presumed to have died in 1989 while testing an experimental light-speed engine designed by Dr. Wendy Lawson, whom Vers recognized as the woman from her nightmares. Fury informed S.H.I.E.L.D. of their location, and a team arrived. Fury realized that Keller was Talos and helped Vers escape in a jet with Lawson's stowaway cat, Goose.
