Summary of the story
An endeavor to genetically re-engineer the measles virus for the purpose of curing cancer resulted in a catastrophic outcome, as it became lethal and infected 99% of the global population. The virus transformed those who survived into vampiric, albino, cannibalistic mutants known as Darkseekers, who are highly susceptible to sunlight and prey on the remaining uninfected individuals.
Three years following the outbreak, in 2012, LTC Robert Neville, a virologist in the U.S. Army, resides in a solitary existence in an abandoned Manhattan, uncertain if any other uninfected humans remain. Neville's daily routine involves conducting experiments on infected rats to discover a cure for the virus, scavenging for food and supplies, and awaiting any survivors who may respond to his continuous recorded radio broadcasts, which instruct them to meet him at midday at the South Street Seaport. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Neville's wife, Zoe, and daughter, Marley, perished in a helicopter accident during the chaotic evacuation of Manhattan, as the military enforced a quarantine of the island. Neville himself remained behind with other military personnel. Neville's sole companion is his German Shepherd, Samantha (Sam), and to cope with his solitude, he frequently "converses" with mannequins and characters on film recordings from video stores. At night, he secures himself with Sam inside his heavily fortified residence in Washington Square Park to evade the Darkseekers.v
