Summary of the story
Tony Stark, the inheritor of Stark Industries, a defense contractor, from his deceased father Howard Stark, was present in Afghanistan, a war-torn country, along with his friend and military liaison, Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, to showcase the new "Jericho" missile. Following the demonstration, Stark's convoy was ambushed, and he was gravely injured by a missile used by the attackers, which belonged to his own company. He was taken captive and imprisoned in a cave by a terrorist group known as the Ten Rings. Yinsen, a fellow captive and doctor, implanted an electromagnet into Stark's chest to prevent the shrapnel shards that had wounded him from reaching his heart and causing his death. The leader of the Ten Rings, Raza, offered Stark his freedom in exchange for building a Jericho missile for the group, but Stark and Yinsen were skeptical of Raza's intentions.
Stark and Yinsen secretly constructed a small yet powerful electric generator, called an arc reactor, to power Stark's electromagnet and a prototype suit of powered armor to aid in their escape. Despite keeping the suit hidden until it was almost complete, the Ten Rings discovered their hostages' intentions and attacked the workshop. Yinsen sacrificed himself to divert their attention while the suit powered up. The armored Stark fought his way out of the cave, found the dying Yinsen, burned the Ten Rings' weapons, and flew away, crashing in the desert and destroying the suit. After being rescued by Rhodes, Stark returned home and announced that his company would no longer manufacture weapons. Obadiah Stane, his father's former partner and the company's manager, warned Stark that this decision could ruin Stark Industries and his father's legacy. In his home workshop, Stark constructed a sleeker, more powerful version of his improvised armor suit, as well as a more potent arc reactor for it and his chest. His personal assistant, Pepper Potts, placed the original reactor inside a small glass showcase. Although Stane requested details, a suspicious Stark decided to keep his work to himself.
