Summary of the story
In the foreseeable future, James McCullen, a weapons expert, has developed a nanotechnology-based weapon known as nanomites. These nanobots are designed to consume metal and other materials, rendering them capable of destroying anything from tanks to entire cities. The only way to stop them is by activating the kill switch. McCullen's company, M.A.R.S., sells four warheads to NATO, which are delivered by American soldiers Duke and Ripcord. However, their convoy is ambushed by the Baroness, who Duke recognizes as his former fiancée, Ana Lewis. Fortunately, Duke and Ripcord are rescued by Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Breaker, and Heavy Duty, who take the warheads to The Pit, G.I. Joe's command center in Egypt. Upon arrival, they rendezvous with General Hawk, the head of the G.I. Joe Team, who takes command of the warheads and excuses Duke and Ripcord. However, after Duke reveals that he knows the Baroness, Hawk is convinced to let them join his group.
It is later revealed that McCullen is using the same nanotechnology to build an army of soldiers with the help of the Doctor. His plan is to use the warheads to cause worldwide panic and bring about a new world order. Using a tracking device, McCullen locates the G.I. Joe base and sends Storm Shadow and the Baroness to retrieve the warheads, with assistance from Zartan.
Storm Shadow and the Baroness successfully retrieve the warheads and take them to Baron DeCobray, the Baroness's husband, to weaponize them in his particle accelerator. After reluctantly doing so, DeCobray is killed by Storm Shadow. The Joes pursue the Baroness and Storm Shadow to Paris, where they launch one of the missiles, hitting the Eiffel Tower and causing destruction in the surrounding area. Duke manages to hit the kill switch, but he is captured and taken to McCullen's base in the Arctic.
