Summary of the story
In Russia, the disclosure of Tony Stark's identity as Iron Man is being covered by the media. Ivan Vanko, whose father Anton Vanko was a former employee of Stark Industries and has recently passed away, observes this and begins constructing a miniature arc reactor similar to Stark's.
After six months, Stark has become a prominent figure in the media and resists the government's pressure to surrender his armored suits. In order to uphold his father Howard's legacy, he reinstates the Stark Expo in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in New York City. Stark discovers that the palladium core in his arc reactor, which sustains his life and powers his armor, is gradually poisoning him and he is unable to find a substitute. As his condition worsens, Stark becomes increasingly reckless and despondent, but chooses not to disclose his condition to anyone. He appoints his assistant Pepper Potts as CEO of Stark Industries and hires Natalie Rushman as his new assistant.
During the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, Stark is attacked by Vanko, who wields electrified whips powered by his own arc reactor. Stark dons his armor and defeats Vanko, but his suit is severely damaged. Vanko reveals that his intention was to prove to the world that Iron Man is not invincible. Stark's rival, Justin Hammer, impressed by Vanko's performance, fakes his death and breaks him out of prison to build a line of armored suits to surpass Stark, but Vanko decides to create unmanned drones instead. At what he believes to be his final birthday party, Stark becomes intoxicated while wearing the Iron Man suit.
