Summary of the story
The Archangel Michael descends to Earth in Los Angeles and severs his wings. Following a raid on a weapons warehouse and the commandeering of a police vehicle from a possessed officer, Michael journeys to the Paradise Falls Diner, situated near the periphery of the Mojave Desert. Meanwhile, Kyle, a single father en route to Los Angeles, halts at the diner. He encounters the proprietor, Bob Hanson; Jeep, Bob's son; Percy, the short-order cook; Charlie, a pregnant waitress; Howard and Sandra Anderson, a married couple; and Audrey, their rebellious teenage daughter. As the diner's television, radio, and telephone malfunction, elderly Gladys enters the diner and exhibits abnormal hostility, biting off a portion of Howard's neck before Kyle dispatches her. A vast swarm of flies envelops the diner, isolating its occupants from the external world and impeding their efforts to transport Howard to the hospital.
Michael arrives and equips the patrons as the sky turns pitch black. Hundreds of vehicles approach, teeming with possessed individuals who commence an assault on the diner. Michael leads the patrons in the battle, but Howard is abducted. Subsequently, Michael expounds that God has lost faith in humanity and dispatched his angels to annihilate the human race. He also discloses that Charlie's infant must survive, as it is destined to be the savior of humanity; Michael defied God's command to slay Charlie's baby, as he still has faith in humanity. Charlie will eventually develop affection for her baby, but, in stark contrast to the Virgin Mary's acceptance of the unborn Jesus in her womb in the Gospels, Charlie declares that she detests it.
