Summary of the story
In 1999, Tony Stark encountered scientist Maya Hansen, the inventor of Extremis, an experimental regenerative treatment that enables recovery from debilitating injuries, at a New Year's Eve celebration. Disabled scientist Aldrich Killian extended an invitation to join his company, Advanced Idea Mechanics, to Stark and Hansen, but Stark declined. Thirteen years later, Stark is grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder and experiencing frequent panic attacks due to his involvement in the alien invasion of New York. He has constructed numerous new Iron Man suits to manage his insomnia, which has caused tension with his partner Pepper Potts.
In the meantime, a series of bombings are attributed to a terrorist known as the Mandarin. Stark's security chief, Happy Hogan, is gravely injured in one of these attacks and falls into a coma, prompting Stark to issue a televised warning to the Mandarin, inadvertently revealing his home address. The Mandarin dispatches gunship helicopters to demolish Stark's residence. Hansen, who had come to alert Stark, survives the assault with Potts. Stark escapes in a new experimental Iron Man suit, which is piloted by his artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. to rural Tennessee, following a flight plan from Stark's inquiry into the Mandarin. Stark's new armor is not fully operational and lacks sufficient power to return to Malibu, leading the world to believe that he perished.
With the assistance of a local boy named Harley Keener, Stark investigates the remnants of a local explosion that bears the hallmarks of a Mandarin attack, despite occurring years before any known terrorist assault. He discovers that the "bombings" were triggered by soldiers who were subjected to Extremis and whose bodies explosively rejected the treatment. These explosions were falsely attributed to a terrorist plot to conceal Extremis' flaws. Stark witnesses Extremis firsthand when Mandarin agents Savin and Brandt attack him: Stark kills Brandt and incapacitates Savin. Meanwhile, Killian resurfaces and abducts Potts with Hansen's help. American intelligence agencies continue to hunt for the Mandarin, with James Rhodes—the former War Machine, now re-branded as the Iron Patriot—lured into a trap to steal his armor.
