Summary of the story
Four years subsequent to his expedition to the center of the earth, the 17-year-old Sean Anderson was apprehended by the police for unlawfully entering a satellite control center with the intention of amplifying a coded signal that could have been transmitted by his long-absent grandfather, Alexander Anderson.
In an effort to establish a connection with Sean, his new stepfather, Hank Parsons, assisted in deciphering the code, which led to the discovery of three books: Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels, and Jules Verne's Mysterious Island. By utilizing the maps contained within each book, Hank was able to combine them into a single island, complete with the coordinates to its location. In an attempt to prove to Sean that there was no mysterious island, Hank agreed to accompany him to the location indicated by the coordinates.
Reluctantly, Hank hired Gabato, a helicopter tourism guide, and his daughter Kailani (towards whom Sean developed an immediate infatuation) to fly them to the coordinates, as they were the only ones willing to take them. Unfortunately, the helicopter was caught in a cyclone, causing them to crash into the Pacific Ocean, where they eventually washed up on the island.
As they ventured further inland, they were astounded to discover miniature elephants (belonging to a prehistoric species known as the Dwarf Sicilian Elephant) and giant butterflies, indicating that the sizes of the island's fauna were inverted. While exploring, Gabato inadvertently disturbed a clutch of eggs, awakening a colossal frilled lizard that pursued them throughout the jungle.
