Summary of the story
In 1996, the adolescent Alex Vreeke of Brantford, New Hampshire, was presented with Jumanji, which had been previously discarded by Alan Parrish and Sarah Whittle in 1969. This was given to him by his father, who had discovered it on the coast. Later that night, Alex discovered that the game had been transformed into a video game cartridge. He chose to play the game and was suddenly transported inside it, disappearing from the real world as time continued to pass.
Twenty-one years later, four students from Brantford High School, namely Spencer Gilpin, Anthony "Fridge" Johnson, Bethany Walker, and Martha Kaply, were given detention for various reasons. Fridge discovered Alex's abandoned video game, and upon starting it, the group was transported into Jumanji, landing in a jungle as their chosen avatars. Spencer became the muscular archaeologist Dr. Xander "Smolder" Bravestone, Fridge became the zoologist Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, Bethany became the male cartographer and paleontologist Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon, and Martha became the sultry martial arts expert Ruby Roundhouse. The three marks on their arms indicated their lives in the game, causing them to fear that if they lost all three, they would actually die.
