Summary of the story
In the Spirit Realm, Grand Master Oogway engages in a battle against General Kai, a spirit warrior yak who has vanquished all other deceased kung fu masters and seized their chi. Oogway's own chi is also taken, but not before he forewarns Kai that his downfall is inevitable. Kai employs the stolen chi to return to the Mortal Realm.
In the meantime, Master Shifu declares his retirement from teaching and appoints Po as his successor. Po's initial attempts at instructing inadvertently harm the Furious Five, prompting Shifu to advise Po to emulate himself less and be more true to his own character. Disheartened, Po returns home, where he encounters Li Shan, a panda who both swiftly realize is Po's biological father. Li had been prompted by a sign from the universe to seek out his son. The two bond immediately, much to the chagrin and envy of Po's adoptive father, Mr. Ping.
Subsequently, Po joins forces with the Five to safeguard the Valley of Peace from Kai's jade zombies, the remnants of the kung fu masters whose chi was stolen. Through research, the group discovers that Kai and Oogway were once friends, and that Kai saved an injured Oogway's life by taking him to a clandestine panda village for healing. The pandas taught Oogway the art of healing chi, but Kai learned to extract chi from others for his own personal gain, leading Oogway to banish him to the Spirit Realm. Li offers to take Po to the village to learn chi and defeat Kai, while Shifu and the Five prepare to defend the Valley. Mr. Ping clandestinely tags along, hoping to drive a wedge between Po and Li, but is soon discovered. Upon arriving at the village, Li refuses to teach Po chi until he has learned to embrace the relaxed lifestyle of a panda.
