Summary of the story
In the coastal town of Oceanside, California, Ruby Gillman, a fifteen-year-old girl, resides with her family, who are krakens attempting to assimilate into human society. Her mother, Agatha, prohibits her from attending the prom at her high school, which is located on a ship in the ocean. Initially, Ruby acquiesces to her mother's wishes, but her friends Margot, Trevin, and Bliss persuade her to attend the event so that she can ask out her crush, Connor. However, before she can do so, Connor falls into the water due to an accident. Ruby jumps in and rescues him. After placing him on the boat ramp, he mistakenly believes that he was saved by the new girl, Chelsea Van Der Zee, who attempts to befriend Ruby.
Following the discovery of bioluminescent suction cups on her fingers, Ruby seeks refuge in the library, where she undergoes a colossal, monstrous transformation as a result of her contact with saltwater. Inadvertently, she destroys the library during the process, startling the librarian. Chelsea witnesses Ruby's kraken form in awe, while Ruby flees to the lighthouse. Agatha discovers Ruby's transformation and pursues her, reuniting with her brother, Brill, along the way. Agatha manages to calm Ruby down, and she returns to her normal size. Upon returning home, Ruby's father, Arthur, and her younger brother, Sam, learn of her transformation. Agatha reveals to Ruby that she, too, can transform into a giant kraken.
