Summary of the story
The Italian-American siblings, Mario and Luigi, have recently established a plumbing enterprise in Brooklyn, much to the disdain of their former employer, Spike, and the disapproval of their father. Upon witnessing a significant water main leak on the news, the brothers venture underground to repair it, but are unexpectedly transported through a Warp Pipe and separated.
Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom, governed by Princess Peach, while Luigi lands in the Dark Lands, ruled by the malevolent Koopa king, Bowser. Bowser intends to wed Peach and will employ a Super Star to obliterate the Mushroom Kingdom if she refuses. He detains Luigi to coerce Mario, whom he perceives as a rival for Peach's affection. Mario encounters Toad, who escorts him to Peach. Peach intends to form an alliance with the primate Kongs to repel Bowser and permits Mario and Toad to accompany her. She also discloses to Mario that she was discovered as an infant in the Mushroom Kingdom, where the Toads took her in and eventually appointed her as their leader. In the Jungle Kingdom, King Cranky Kong agrees to assist if Mario defeats his son, Donkey Kong, in a battle. Despite Donkey Kong's formidable strength, Mario prevails using a Cat Suit.
Mario, Peach, Toad, and the Kongs employ karts to return to the Mushroom Kingdom, but Bowser's army ambushes them on Rainbow Road. When a blue-shelled Koopa General demolishes a portion of the road in a kamikaze attack, Mario and Donkey Kong plummet into the ocean while the other Kongs are apprehended. Peach and Toad return to the Mushroom Kingdom and urge the inhabitants to evacuate. Bowser arrives aboard his flying castle and proposes to Peach, who reluctantly accepts after Bowser's advisor, Kamek, torments Toad. Mario and Donkey Kong, having been devoured by a Maw-Ray resembling an eel, discover that they both desire their fathers' respect. They evade the Maw-Ray by riding a rocket from Donkey Kong's kart and hasten to Bowser and Peach's nuptials.
