Summary of the story
At the commencement of the film, the camera tracks and zooms into the planet Mars, from which fragments of an unknown nature are observed being launched towards Earth. A voiceover is heard in the background, which reworks the opening line of the renowned novel that the movie is an adaptation of, stating that unbeknownst to humanity, they were being closely observed and scrutinized by an intelligence far superior, which had devised plans to attack at a later time.
The narrative is set in contemporary times on Earth and centers around three astronomy graduates from UCL, namely Herb, Oggy, and Hannah. Upon learning of the possibility of a meteorite originating from Mars falling in the vicinity of Woking, England, the trio decides to embark on a nocturnal exploration on their bicycles. Herb holds a liberal perspective regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life and has a passion for exploring the unknown, which he inherited from his deceased father. Consequently, he also subscribes to the views of their department head, Professor Stint, who posits the possibility of life on Mars in relation to the peculiar-looking meteorite that has fallen on Earth. As a tribute to the author of the source material, the character is named Herbert Wells. Oggy, on the other hand, is more skeptical and irritable, dismissing such opinions as fanciful theories fit for trivial conversations but not to be taken seriously. Hannah is the more pragmatic member of the group, often serving as a mediator to resolve disputes between her two companions.
