Summary of the story
One evening, a simian creature is born from a stone situated atop a lofty mountain, causing a disturbance to the Jade Emperor. Just as the Emperor issues the command to eliminate the newborn, Buddha appears before him and advises him to allow the creature to discover its purpose.
The simian, known as Monkey, encounters a group of fellow primates, but his ill-disciplined nature prevents him from fitting in. One of his misadventures leads to a dreaded demon seizing one of the troop's offspring for sustenance, resulting in Monkey's expulsion. In order to prove his worth to the troop, he trains to combat the demon. After many years of preparation, he confronts the demon, but his training proves to be ineffective, and another cub is taken. To acquire a more suitable weapon, Monkey plunges into the sea realm of the Dragon King, where he discovers the latter gloating over a glowing column that he intends to use to eradicate all life on the world's surface. By communicating with the column, Monkey transforms it into a staff and escapes.
With the staff in his possession, Monkey returns to the demon's lair, vanquishes him, and rescues the cub. He then proclaims himself King of the Monkeys, but when the troop's elder warns him that his staff should only be wielded by the gods, the new Monkey King decides to slay 100 demons, thereby earning the right to enter the Heavens and become a deity. Eventually, he arrives at a village terrorized by the Red Girl. With the support of a young woman named Lin, Monkey King defeats the Red Girl, and Lin pledges herself as his assistant. During the victory celebration, the Dragon King emerges from the nearby sea to reclaim his prized weapon. After a battle with him, Monkey King departs from the village, with Lin following him, despite his condescending treatment of her. Unbeknownst to him, Lin is an agent of the Dragon King, tasked with assisting him in reclaiming the staff in exchange for saving her drought-stricken village.
