Summary of the story
Many eons ago, Bor, the progenitor of Odin, engaged in a fierce battle with the Dark Elf Malekith, who sought to unleash a powerful weapon known as the Aether upon the Nine Realms. After vanquishing Malekith's forces, including the formidable Kursed warriors, on their home planet of Svartalfheim, Bor dispatched the Aether to an inaccessible realm. Unbeknownst to Bor, Malekith and his lieutenant Algrim, along with a small group of Dark Elves, managed to evade capture by entering into a state of suspended animation.
In the present day, Loki is incarcerated for his crimes against humanity on Earth, while Thor and his allies defend Vanaheim against marauders in the final battle of a campaign to pacify the Nine Realms, following the reconstruction of the Bifröst, the Rainbow Bridge that connects the realms, which had been destroyed two years prior. The Asgardians become aware of the Convergence, a rare alignment of the Nine Realms, and as the event draws near, portals linking the worlds begin to appear at random.
In London, astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster ventures to an abandoned factory where such portals have emerged. Foster is transported to the hidden realm where the Aether is stored, and it enters her body. Thor locates Foster and brings her to Asgard, where Odin cautions that the Aether will not only cause her demise but also herald a catastrophic prophecy.
