Summary of the story
The protagonist of the story is Seok-woo, a fund manager who is a divorced father to his daughter Su-an. Su-an expresses her desire to spend her birthday with her mother in Busan, which Seok-woo initially dismisses. However, after watching a video of Su-an struggling with stage fright during her singing recital due to his absence, Seok-woo feels guilty and decides to fulfill her wish. They board the KTX 101 at Seoul Station, where they encounter other passengers such as Sang-hwa and his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, COO Yon-suk, a high school baseball team, elderly sisters In-gil and Jong-gil, and a homeless stowaway.
Before the train departs, an ill woman enters unnoticed and turns into a zombie, attacking a train attendant who also turns. The infection spreads rapidly throughout the train, forcing the survivors to escape to another car and lock the doors. As they learn about the epidemic spreading across the country through internet reports and phone calls, they stop at Daejeon Station, only to find the city overrun by zombies. They hastily retreat back to the train, splitting up into different cars in the ensuing chaos.
Seok-woo discovers that his company is indirectly involved in the disaster through a phone call. The military establishes a quarantine zone near Busan, and the conductor sets a course towards it. Seok-woo, Sang-hwa, and Yong-guk fight their way to where Su-an and Seong-kyeong are hiding with In-gil and the homeless man. Once regrouped, they struggle through the zombie horde to the front train car, where the rest of the passengers are sheltered. However, at the urging of Yon-suk and train attendant Ki-chul, the passengers prevent the survivors from entering, fearing that they are infected. Sang-hwa sacrifices himself to give the others time to force open the door and enter the car, but In-gil is killed in the process.
