Summary of the story
The novel is structured around a sequence of interviews conducted by a fictionalized version of the esteemed author Max Brooks, who is renowned for his work on The Zombie Survival Guide. Within the narrative, Brooks is referred to as the "Civilian Survival Guide" and embarks on a global journey a decade after the conclusion of what is commonly known as the "Zombie War."
The pandemic commences two decades prior in the early 21st Century, with the infection of a young boy in a village located in Dachang, China. The virus, known as "Solanum" in The Zombie Survival Guide, is suggested to have been released due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Initially, the Politburo attempts to conceal the outbreak by fabricating a military crisis with Taiwan to avoid appearing vulnerable on the international stage. However, the virus rapidly spreads beyond China, with thousands of infected individuals disseminating the virus through immigration, human trafficking, and the organ trade.
