Summary of the story

Following the traumatic experience of being compelled to eliminate his fellow assassins, Mike Fallon relocates to the island of Malta to recuperate and distance himself from London. He secures employment as a hitman-for-hire in neighboring countries and retains the services of martial artist Wong Siu-ling to engage in random sparring sessions to maintain his proficiency. One evening, Mike encounters his former associate Finicky Fred, who informs him that their former employer, Big Ray, lost his assassin's bar as a result of Mike's vengeful actions. Fred is also experiencing financial difficulties due to his infatuation with an online love interest to whom he gave a substantial sum of money. Mike takes pity on Fred and permits him to reside in his residence and assist him on assignments. The duo establishes a clandestine headquarters to test Fred's gadgets and strategize their operations.

At Mike's suggestion, Fred declines a contract to eliminate Dante Zuuzer, the entitled heir to a Cosa Nostra organization that even Mike regards with trepidation. After completing another assignment, Mike and Fred are abducted and brought before Mrs. Zuuzer, who implores Mike to track down and eliminate whoever commissioned the contract on Dante in exchange for sparing Fred's life. The attempted assassination of Dante was executed using Mike's signature methods. The Zuuzers release Mike, who encounters Big Ray at a local pub. Fred had sent a letter to Ray outlining their new business venture, contrary to Mike's advice. Ray vows to avenge himself against Mike, disclosing that he is in Malta for a job. Mike deduces that Ray was responsible for the attempt on Dante's life. Ray reveals that the client has increased the bounty to €9 million and opened the contract to all comers, as well as hacked into the tracking device in Dante's watch to broadcast his location.
