Summary of the story
Upon obtaining the Power Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones, from the planet Xandar, Thanos and his subordinates, Ebony Maw, Cull Obsidian, Proxima Midnight, and Corvus Glaive, intercept the spacecraft carrying the survivors of Asgard's destruction. Following the subjugation of Thor, Thanos proceeds to extract the Space Stone from the Tesseract, overpower the Hulk, and execute Loki. Heimdall meets a similar fate after utilizing the Bifröst to transport Hulk to Earth. Subsequently, Thanos and his subordinates depart, leaving the ship in ruins.
Hulk crash-lands in the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York City, reverting to the form of Bruce Banner. He alerts Stephen Strange and Wong of Thanos's plan to eradicate half of all life in the universe, prompting them to enlist the aid of Tony Stark. Maw and Obsidian arrive to retrieve the Time Stone from Strange, capturing him after he proves impervious to their attempts to seize the Stone due to his enchantment. Stark and Parker clandestinely board Maw's spaceship while Wong remains behind to safeguard the Sanctum.
The Guardians of the Galaxy respond to the Asgardian ship's distress signal and rescue Thor. Thor deduces that Thanos is after the Reality Stone, which Taneleer Tivan possesses on Knowhere. He journeys with Rocket and Groot to Nidavellir to enlist the assistance of the dwarf king Eitri in forging the battle-axe Stormbreaker. Meanwhile, Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, and Mantis travel to Knowhere, only to discover that Thanos has already obtained the Reality Stone. Thanos abducts Gamora, who discloses the location of the Soul Stone to spare Nebula from torture. On Vormir, the Stone's guardian, Red Skull, informs Thanos that he can only acquire it by sacrificing someone he loves. Thanos sacrifices Gamora, thereby acquiring the Stone.
