Summary of the story
In the year 2001, one year subsequent to the explosion of Flight 180, Kimberly Corman, a college student, embarked on a spring break trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, accompanied by her friends Shaina McKlank, Dano Estevez, and Frankie Whitman. While waiting on the entrance ramp to U.S. Route 23, Kimberly experienced a premonition of a catastrophic pile-up caused by a logging truck. She deliberately stalled her car on the entrance ramp, thereby preventing several individuals from entering the highway, including lottery winner Evan Lewis, mother Nora Carpenter and her fifteen-year-old son Tim, businesswoman Kat Jennings, stoner Rory Peters, pregnant Isabella Hudson, high school teacher Eugene Dix, and state trooper Thomas Burke. While Burke was questioning Kimberly, the pile-up occurred, resulting in the deaths of Shaina, Dano, and Frankie, who were struck by a car carrier after Burke saved Kimberly at the last moment.
Following the survivors' interrogation at the police station, Evan met his demise when he was fatally impaled by a fire escape ladder while attempting to flee from a fire in his apartment. Kimberly, who was aware of Death's presence, sought assistance from Clear Rivers, the last survivor of Flight 180, who had committed herself to a psychiatric ward for protection after Alex Browning was killed by a falling brick.
