Summary of the story
In the Eastern European nation of Sokovia, the Avengers, consisting of Tony Stark, Thor, Bruce Banner, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and Clint Barton, launch a raid on a Hydra facility under the command of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. Strucker has been conducting experiments on humans using the scepter previously wielded by Loki. During the raid, the Avengers encounter two of Strucker's test subjects, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, who possess superhuman abilities. The team apprehends Strucker and retrieves Loki's scepter, with Stark taking possession of it.
Upon examining the scepter, Stark and Banner discover an artificial intelligence within its gem. They decide to use it to complete Stark's "Ultron" global defense program. However, the resulting sentient Ultron believes that the only way to save Earth is to eliminate humanity. Ultron eliminates Stark's A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. and attacks the Avengers at their headquarters. Ultron escapes with the scepter and upgrades his rudimentary body using the resources at Strucker's Sokovia base. He also builds an army of robot drones.
After killing Strucker, Ultron recruits the Maximoffs, who hold Stark responsible for their parents' deaths due to his company's weapons. Ultron then travels to Johannesburg to obtain vibranium from arms dealer Ulysses Klaue. The Avengers attempt to stop Ultron and the Maximoffs, but Wanda subdues them with haunting visions. Banner transforms into the Hulk and goes on a rampage until Stark stops him with his anti-Hulk armor.
