Summary of the story
In 2028, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp brought about a revolutionary change in warfare by introducing robotic peacekeepers that were capable of maintaining law and order. The company, under the leadership of CEO Raymond Sellars, endeavored to market this technology to domestic law enforcement. However, the Dreyfus Act, which prohibited the deployment of militarized drones in the United States, prevented this from happening. Being aware of the fact that most Americans were opposed to the use of military systems in their communities, Sellars requested Dr. Dennett Norton and his research team to devise an alternative solution. The outcome was a proposal for a cyborg police officer. However, Norton informed Sellars that only an individual who was stable enough to handle being a cyborg could be transformed into one, and some candidates were rejected.
Alex Murphy, a police detective from Detroit, was selected after he was critically injured in a car bomb explosion that was orchestrated by crime boss Antoine Vallon as a means of revenge for Murphy's investigation into his activities. Norton convinced Murphy's wife, Clara, to give her consent for the procedure. Upon awakening and realizing the extent of his transformation, a frustrated Murphy attempted to escape, but Norton deactivated him and returned him to the laboratory. As Norton revealed to Murphy that the only remnants of his human body were most of his head (excluding parts of the brain), respiratory organs, heart, and right hand, a disgusted Murphy requested euthanasia. Norton reminded Murphy about his wife's and son's patience, persuading him to live for their sake. During combat training with trainer Rick Mattox, Murphy proved to be inefficient in comparison to the standard OmniCorp drones. Norton altered Murphy's programming to make him more efficient by allowing drone programming to take over his actions, making Murphy believe that they were his own. This reprogramming significantly increased Murphy's efficiency but left him less empathetic due to his human nature being bypassed. That night, Murphy went to his house to meet Clara and their son David.
