Summary of the story
Thomas, Newt, and Frypan, the remaining members of the free "Gladers", have aligned themselves with the Right Arm resistance in an effort to liberate other Immunes from a train carriage operated by WCKD, an organization responsible for the capture and experimentation of immune children. Upon discovering that their Glader comrade, Minho, has been taken to the "Last City", WCKD's central base of operations, the trio disobeys the orders of Vince, the leader of the Right Arm, and sets out to rescue him. Minho is being subjected to torture by WCKD in an attempt to develop a cure for the virus. The group is confronted by Cranks, humans infected with the Flare, but is ultimately saved by Jorge and Brenda, who join their cause.
Upon reaching the wall of the Last City, which serves as a barrier against the Cranks, the group encounters a protest outside the city gates. WCKD responds with violence, leading to the group's capture by a masked crew, one of whom is revealed to be Gally, who survived a previous attack. Gally leads the group to Lawrence, a rebellion leader, who assists Thomas, Newt, and Gally in infiltrating the Last City. Gally identifies Teresa, and offers to help Thomas gain access to WCKD headquarters. Newt reveals that he is infected, and Thomas promises to cure him. In order to achieve this, Thomas and Gally capture Teresa.
