Summary of the story
In the year 2035, a decade after the Battle of the Breach, which saw the closure of the portal utilized by the Precursors to dispatch Kaiju, Jake Pentecost, a former Jaeger pilot and son of Stacker Pentecost, engages in the illicit trade of stealing and selling Jaeger parts on the black market in Santa Monica, California. Upon tracing a disabled Jaeger's power core to the clandestine workshop of a fifteen-year-old Jaeger enthusiast named Amara Namani, both individuals are apprehended by the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC) following a confrontation between Amara's small, single-pilot Jaeger Scrapper and the law enforcement Jaeger November Ajax. Jake's adoptive sister, Japanese Senator Mako Mori, persuades him to return to the PPDC as an instructor to avoid imprisonment, with Amara as his recruit.
Upon arrival at the China Shatterdome, Jake commences training Jaeger cadets alongside his estranged former co-pilot Nathan "Nate" Lambert. Nate and Mako explicate that the Jaeger program is imperiled by the Shao Corporation's novel drone program, which proposes to mass-produce Jaeger drones developed by Liwen Shao and Dr. Newton 'Newt' Geiszler. Mako is scheduled to deliver a final evaluation to determine the approval of the drones at a PPDC council meeting in Sydney, but is inadvertently killed by a rogue Jaeger, Obsidian Fury, during a skirmish with the latter and Gipsy Avenger, Jake and Nate's Jaeger, before she can do so. Her demise prompts the PPDC council to authorize and deploy the drones immediately. Obsidian Fury manages to evade capture by backup Jaegers and disappears into the ocean.
