Summary of the story
In the land of Avalonia, which is encompassed by an unending wall of mountains, Jaeger Clade and his adolescent son, Searcher, are intrepid explorers who venture into the wilderness to discover new worlds. During an attempt to traverse the mountains, Searcher comes across a green plant that emits energy. He and the rest of the expedition team decide to bring the plant, which they dub Pando, back to Avalonia, while Jaeger continues his mission alone, incensed by their decision.
Twenty-five years later, Searcher has gained recognition for introducing Pando as a fuel source for Avalonia. He and his wife, Meridian, are Pando farmers, while their son, Ethan, harbors feelings for his friend, Diazo, and resents his father's expectation that he will also become a farmer.
One evening, Callisto Mal, the president of Avalonia and one of Jaeger's former expedition companions, arrives in her airship, the Venture, and informs the Clades that Pando is losing its potency. She implores Searcher to help locate the cause and he joins an expedition to explore a colossal sinkhole where the roots of Pando have been discovered. When Ethan sneaks aboard the Venture with their dog, Legend, Meridian pursues them in her crop-duster to retrieve him. The Venture is attacked by wyvern-like creatures and crashes in a subterranean world, where Searcher and Legend become separated from the group. They are confronted by a creature known as a "Reaper," but are rescued by Jaeger, who has been living underground all these years. He has been attempting to cross the mountains from below, but is obstructed by an acidic ocean and expresses his intention to board the Venture to make another attempt.
Meanwhile, Ethan wanders off from the Venture and befriends an amorphous blue creature, which he names Splat, before reuniting with Searcher, Legend, and Jaeger. They are attacked by more Reapers, but are saved by Meridian and Callisto and return to the Venture.
