Summary of the story
Nemo is a juvenile female who resides in a lighthouse with her widowed father, Peter, who serves as a lighthouse keeper. Peter regales her with fantastical bedtime stories about his escapades with Flip, his accomplice from their outlaw days. One tempestuous night, Peter ventures out to assist a distressed vessel and perishes at sea, leaving Nemo an orphan. Her estranged uncle, Philip, takes her in. In contrast to Peter, Philip, a vendor of doorknobs, leads a tedious and solitary existence.
Nemo relocates to the metropolis with Philip, and the two struggle to acclimate to one another. One night, she is roused from her slumber when her stuffed pig, Pig, comes to life. In actuality, she is still asleep and in Slumberland, the realm between dreams. Here, she encounters Flip, discovering that he is tangible and not merely a figment of her father's imagination. A stubborn and unscrupulous outlaw, Flip is in search of a map that will lead him to enchanted wish-granting pearls.
Nemo discovers the map in the waking world and transports it back to Slumberland by sleeping through her classes. Flip reluctantly permits her to accompany him on his quest for the pearls so that she can wish her father into her dreams. Nemo learns that Flip has refused to awaken for so long that he no longer recollects his identity in the real world. He employs the map as a guide through various individuals' dreams to reach the Sea of Nightmares, where the pearls are located. They are assailed by Nemo's nightmare, a cloud of smoke resembling a kraken. Flip is subsequently incarcerated by Agent Green of the Bureau of Subconscious Activities (BoSA) for trespassing on people's dreams.
