Summary of the story
Sophie, a ten-year-old girl residing in a London orphanage, frequently remains awake during the "witching hour". One night, she vociferates at some men in an alleyway. Subsequently, she observes an elderly Giant Man outside her window, who apprehends her and transports her to his abode in Giant Country. He elucidates that he cannot permit Sophie to return to her world and disclose the existence of giants. If she ventures out unaccompanied, she may fall prey to the nine significantly larger giants.
In his workshop of dreams, the giant fabricates a nightmare to persuade the slumbering Sophie to remain with him in safety. The Fleshlumpeater, the puerile leader of the man-eating giants, intrudes and demands a "boo-boo" on his finger to be remedied. He detects Sophie's scent, but the elderly giant convinces him to depart after he nearly consumes a repulsive vegetable known as a snozzcumber, which Sophie briefly concealed. Sophie convinces the amiable giant to accompany her to visit Dream Country. They inadvertently awaken the other giants, and after the Bloodbottler proposes they "frolic", they torment the friendly giant. A thunderstorm compels the man-eating giants to retreat into their cave, but the Fleshlumpeater discovers Sophie's discarded blanket.
