Summary of the story
Zoe Parker, a medical student, reluctantly acquiesces to attend a party at her medical school at the insistence of her acquaintances. During her retrieval of a keg of beer from the morgue, Zoe is confronted by her disturbed patient, Max, who is obsessively infatuated with her and whose blood exhibits an unusually high level of antibodies. Max proceeds to assault and attempt to rape her, but a corpse reanimates and bites into Max's shoulder. Zoe flees and alerts the attendees at the party, but a swarm of the reanimated corpses, subsequently referred to as "rotters," invade and slaughter all except Zoe, who escapes through a window, only to discover that the city is besieged by rotters.
The survivors of the initial outbreak are relocated to refugee camps, with Zoe being assigned to the High Rock Emergency Bunker, which is under the supervision of Lieutenant Miguel Salazar.
Five years later, High Rock Emergency Bunker has lost communication with other camps and headquarters. Despite Miguel's belief that a cure is unattainable, Zoe and her colleague Elyse serve as medical practitioners at the camp, treating illnesses and utilizing rotter blood samples to develop a cure for the rotters.
