Summary of the story
Evelyn has officially resealed the wall surrounding Chicago and has initiated trials for Jeanine's coup supporters, with their lives at stake. Johanna has chosen to disassociate herself from these proceedings, and many newly converted Allegiants have followed suit. Tris, Four, Caleb, Tori, Christina, and Peter manage to escape over the wall, but are pursued by Factionless guards led by Edgar. Tragically, Tori is killed in the process. However, the group is ultimately rescued by unknown soldiers with advanced technology.
The group is taken to the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, a city of advanced technology that is concealed by a cloaking shield. The root cause of society's problems is attributed to individuals who tampered with their offspring's genes to gain an advantage, which ultimately led to the Purity Wars that devastated most of the planet. The genetically "pure" individuals, as opposed to those with gene modifications, established the Bureau and its series of experiments in isolated, ruined cities in an attempt to trigger a naturally pure genome. Tris is the first to exhibit the desired outcome.
Caleb and Peter are assigned to surveillance teams that remotely monitor Chicago, while Christina and Four are assigned to military training under Nita. Matthew brings Tris to David, the leader of the Bureau, who provides her with a device that enables her to view her mother's memories. Tris discovers that her mother was rescued from the wastelands as a child and subsequently volunteered to participate in the Chicago experiment. Caleb warns Four and Tris of the ongoing conflict in Chicago between Allegiants and Factionless. Tris agrees to assist David in continuing the experiment if he requests the council's intervention in the fighting.
