Summary of the story
On the 6th of August in the year 1897, the merchant vessel Demeter was discovered washed ashore in England. The authorities who investigated the wreckage discovered a captain's log among the debris. The log revealed that four weeks prior, the Demeter had docked in Varna, Bulgaria, to collect cargo for transportation to London. The shipment, which consisted of several large wooden crates, was loaded onto the vessel by local workers from Romania. These workers, however, refused to assist with the loading of the crates beyond a certain time of day, as they wished to depart the area before sunset and wished the crew good luck.
During this time, a doctor named Clemens overheard that the ship was in need of additional crew members. He attempted to persuade the crew that he would be a valuable asset to the team due to his medical expertise and education in astronomy at Cambridge. However, he was initially rejected by the first mate, Wojchek. Shortly thereafter, Clemens saved the captain's grandson, Toby, from being crushed by one of the loose crates. The captain, Elliott, was impressed by Clemens' actions and invited him to join the crew, replacing a new hire who had left upon seeing the dragon emblem on the crates.
One of the crates fell and broke open in the cargo hold, prompting Clemens to investigate. Inside, he discovered a woman buried in dirt who was barely alive. He performed blood transfusions on her to treat a seeming infection. Later, while sailing in the Aegean Sea, Clemens and crew mate Olgaren saw a mysterious figure in the fog on deck.
The following night, all the animals aboard the ship, including the ship's dog, Huckleberry, were killed. The crew, fearing a rabies outbreak, threw the animals overboard. Anna, a secret stowaway, woke up and warned the crew about a monster from Transylvania that feeds on the blood of humans. In her town, they referred to the creature as Dracula, and she had been given to the monster as a slave of blood so that it would leave her town alone. Anna claimed that Dracula was already aboard the ship and looking to feed, revealing several bites from the beast on her body.
